Welcome to Relational Gestalt

My name is Rupert, I am a qualified and accredited psychotherapist working in private practice in Edinburgh. Please take a further look to find out more.

About Me

I am fascinated by people and human experience and take the philosophical position that all relationship is co-created. That we influence and are influenced by each other and by the world around us. It is through understanding and exploring the process of relating that something new and vibrant can be created. I work from a phenomenological stance, meaning that I am interested in your subjective experience, processes and awareness rather than relying on judgements or interpretations. It is these relational and phenomenological elements of gestalt that make it an accessible and exciting therapy, and a powerful medium for change.

When I am not working in private practice I like to spend time in nature walking the woods, hills and coastline of Scotland. I have a special interest in human relationship with nature and the therapeutic potential of the natural environment.

I work from offices on Gayfield Street in Edinburgh. I am not currently taking on new clients.

I charge a standard rate of £50 per 50minute session for psychotherapy and supervision.

I charge a standard rate of £60 per 50minute session for couples therapy.

I offer a limited number of reduced cost, student and concessionary rates please contact me to discuss.

What is Gestalt Psychotherapy?

For me Gestalt therapy offers a refreshingly different way of relating to yourself, your environment and other people. Gestalt is a humanistic/existential therapy, based on the belief that people have all the necessary abilities to solve their problems and difficulties and lead satisfying, creative, vibrant lives. However, sometimes we get stuck and need some assistance. I see my task as a psychotherapist to help you see more clearly what your situation is, find out how you are a part of it, and experiment with finding new solutions or ways to face your difficulties.

Gestalt therapy is not just a talking therapy. It explores immediate experience using a holistic, embodied approach. By raising awareness in the various contexts of life and by moving between talking,  action and current experience we learn to experiment with new ways of being.

Is Gestalt the 'right' therapy for me?

Seeing a therapist for the first time can be a daunting experience and there are many different models and practitioners to choose from. Finding the right therapy and therapist  can be a challenge in itself.

However, across the spectrum of counselling and psychotherapy, research has shown that it is the relationship between therapist and client, more than any other factor, that determines the effectiveness of the therapy. Therefore, choosing somebody that you feel comfortable and connected with can be the most important factor. I would always recommend you see a qualified and professionally accredited therapist.
